The BEST DIY lip balm with essential oils!!

The BEST DIY lip balm with essential oils!!

Hi friends!!! Recently my mom and Aunt came to see us for my son’s 5th birthday (Party in the Park! Great, cheap birthday party idea…blog about that coming next!).  I recently got both of them to fall in love with my essential oils, so I knew they would LOVE making these lip balms! My aunt really enjoyed it, especially choosing which oils we were going to pair together.  We chose Peppermint & Orange, Grapefruit & Lemon, and we made 5 Purification sticks to treat cold sores and such.  It was our first time making these so we weren’t expecting stellar results… but SHOOT!!! These are great!  I gave some to my friends at Easter and they can’t stop talking about how much they rock.  If you’re looking for a great recipe… trust me… this one is it!  You can just use my combinations as a reference, but choose which oils you like best!

What you need:  (I bought all my stuff off of Amazon except for the EOs).

  1. 3T Beeswax
  2.  2T Coconut Oil
  3.  1T Shea Butter
  4.  20 empty lip balm tubes (save yourself the hassel of reading reviews on a million different empty tubes like these.   These ones are perfect, cheap, and they do not leak.  They’re clear so you can see how much you have left and you can dress them up with some cheap Target washi tape later)
  5.  10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  6.  10 drops Orange Essential Oil

These ingredients will make 20 tubes.  So if you want to make 10 tubes of one mix and 10 tubes of another blend, then just half the recipe.  That’s what we did! We had five tubes left over so those became our Purification treatment sticks.

What to do:

Add your beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter to a double boiler.  When it is completely melted, add in your essential oils and stir.  Use a syringe (a kids medicine dropper works great!) to transfer the mix from the double boiler to the lip balm tubes.  Fill to the top and place the cap on.  Let cool on the counter for 30 minutes and then transfer to the refrigerator for 30 minutes.  Then use, enjoy, and share!

NOTE:  We halved this recipe so we only used 5 drops of each essential oil.  If you’re doing a citrus blend like we did, I would suggest keeping the drops at 10 and 10.  Ours was pretty weak in flavor and I think its just because the citruses aren’t as strong as the peppermint per se.

You can mark the lids with sharpie and/or dress them up with some Washi tape.  That was my attempt lol I never claimed to be perfect! But it was good enough for my family and friends who just like getting free stuff 🙂

Clean up note:  Do not just stick your empty oil bowl in the sink and try to wash it.  It will be a mess.  When the bowl is warm, wipe it out thoroughly with a paper towel.  Then wash it in the sink…. a lesson I learned the hard way!

I hope you enjoy these as much as me and my friends are! Even my son Parker has claimed one as his own 🙂  Thanks for being here! Follow my group Oils & Us on Facebook to see what else we’re up to. Oil Drop #4: The Aroma in Aromatherapy!

Oil Drop #4: The Aroma in Aromatherapy!

Oil Drop of the Day #4

Hi Everybody!! At this point in the series, you know what essential oils are, how they work, and the importance of using a great quality oil. You may have checked out Young Living’s Website after learning about Seed to Seal . And I bet I know what’s on your mind: After I decide to try the essential oil lifestyle… how do I exactly go about using them? 😉  Let’s start answering this by looking at the most popular way we love to use Aromatherapy… the Aroma!

***When inhaling an essential oil, it will take about 20 seconds for it to reach your brain and only about 20 minutes to affect every cell in your body. That’s quick work and quick relief!

Did you know? Your olfactory nerve directly speaks to your brain via your amygdala (where emotions connect with smell) and your hippocampus (where smell connects with your memories). No wonder an aroma has so much influence on our moods!

Introducing!!!!: The Diffuser!!! There are many types of diffusers. I’m sure you all have had a Scentsy warmer or Glade plug-in. These heat methods are great for delicious scents, but we’re talking therapy here! We want our noses UNstuffed, our chests Uncongested, and to be Unawake at night! We want our odors annihilated not just covered up! We want to kill airborne pathogens! We want focus, meditation, calm, energy, and happiness! If that’s what you’re want, than you’re looking for an Ultrasonic Diffuser!

***Ultrasonic Diffuser: Uses electronic frequencies to cause a small disk under the surface of a liquid (usually water) to vibrate very fast. These vibrations break the oil up into tiny micro-particles, dispersing the oil into the air within a fine mist. These particles directly communicate with the brain like we discussed earlier AND then they are easily absorbed by the lungs for a therapeutic effect on the body, mind, and spirit.

Don’t have a diffuser? Here’s some other ways to inhale: Straight from the bottle, add a drop to your palm and cup around your nose and mouth while breathing deeply, rubbing a drop on your pillow case, rub a drop on a stuffed animal, add a drop to a cotton ball placed in a stinky area, add some drops to boiling water and inhale the steam, put a drop in your diffuser necklace (new and super cool!), add a drop on your wrist and smell, rub a drop on the collar of your shirt, put a little on your finger and swipe under your nose, add a drop to a clothespin and attach to your car heater/air condition….. many ways to get creative and use the inhalation method! Your imagination is the only limit!

In the picture below, I am suffering from hellish allergies and breathing in the mist from my diffuser (Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint). Was easily doing Pilates 20 minute later and was allergy free the rest of the day!

DIY Whitening Mouthwash!

DIY Whitening Mouthwash!

Good morning friends!! It’s a snow day here in North Carolina (which means we got a dusting of snow and some ice and the city shut down)… which compels me to make things with essential oils and mason jars!  Its my kind of SAHM type fun lol 🙂  Mouthwash sounded like a great DIY!  We haven’t bought it in years because it’s so expensive for something you just spit out.. not to mention full of all kinds of ingredients I can’t pronounce, let alone desire in my mouth.  So, I came across a Pinterest recipe for some DIY mouthwash.  It called for salt as the medium to dissolve the oils.  I followed that, but the salty taste was REALLY unpleasant.  So I adjusted the recipe and used baking soda as the medium for the essential oils and it is fantastic!

Baking Soda for mouth care:

1.  Balances levels of acid to help treat and prevent halitosis

2.  Discourages the formation of plaque to help prevent gum disease.

3.  Promotes healing to soothe ulcers and sores

4.  An effective whitening agent to help remove stains from the teeth

Young Living Thieves Essential Oil (lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, cloves, rosemary):

Whiter teeth, healthy gums, prevents halitosis, heals cold sores and fever blisters, and increases energy!

Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil:

Whitening, refreshing, antibacterial, and minty fresh smell!

** At only a few cents per drop, my half pint jar of mouthwash only cost me about 88 cents to make.  And I feel completely safe and happy using it!

1.  Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda into your jar.  Add 4 drops of Thieves EO and 5 drops of Peppermint EO.

2.  Add one cup of water.  Replace lid and shake.  Done!

** You can adjust the number of drops of your oils as you prefer.  Thieves is more cinnamon-like and peppermint is, of course, more minty! I personally like the minty-ness, so I went more Peppermint heavy 🙂

Enjoy!! and feel free to leave a comment or question!
