DIY Whitening Mouthwash!

Good morning friends!! It’s a snow day here in North Carolina (which means we got a dusting of snow and some ice and the city shut down)… which compels me to make things with essential oils and mason jars!  Its my kind of SAHM type fun lol 🙂  Mouthwash sounded like a great DIY!  We haven’t bought it in years because it’s so expensive for something you just spit out.. not to mention full of all kinds of ingredients I can’t pronounce, let alone desire in my mouth.  So, I came across a Pinterest recipe for some DIY mouthwash.  It called for salt as the medium to dissolve the oils.  I followed that, but the salty taste was REALLY unpleasant.  So I adjusted the recipe and used baking soda as the medium for the essential oils and it is fantastic!

Baking Soda for mouth care:

1.  Balances levels of acid to help treat and prevent halitosis

2.  Discourages the formation of plaque to help prevent gum disease.

3.  Promotes healing to soothe ulcers and sores

4.  An effective whitening agent to help remove stains from the teeth

Young Living Thieves Essential Oil (lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, cloves, rosemary):

Whiter teeth, healthy gums, prevents halitosis, heals cold sores and fever blisters, and increases energy!

Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil:

Whitening, refreshing, antibacterial, and minty fresh smell!

** At only a few cents per drop, my half pint jar of mouthwash only cost me about 88 cents to make.  And I feel completely safe and happy using it!

TO MAKE:

1.  Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda into your jar.  Add 4 drops of Thieves EO and 5 drops of Peppermint EO.

2.  Add one cup of water.  Replace lid and shake.  Done!

** You can adjust the number of drops of your oils as you prefer.  Thieves is more cinnamon-like and peppermint is, of course, more minty! I personally like the minty-ness, so I went more Peppermint heavy 🙂

Enjoy!! and feel free to leave a comment or question!

    • Thieves EO is a blend of Rosemary, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Clove essential oils. The particular blend is used to support our immune system and protect us from harmful bacteria and free radicals. It’s also very good for tooth and gum health! 🙂

    • Hey Valerie, there’s not an exact expiration, but I personally would try to use it within 4-6 weeks (a month, month and half) and that’s only because I like fresh things for my mouth health 🙂

    • I’ve read that using peroxide is a great whitener. Just like this mix though, you wouldn’t want to use it everyday forever without a break. You’ll notice when your teeth or gums start feeling sensitive to give it a break for a week or so.

    • I use mine every night (or most nights, when I remember eek)…. you may notice though that your teeth and gums start feeling sensitive, like if you ever used a whitening toothpaste or peroxide, and then it’s time to give it a break until they feel normal again.

  2. I just tried making this and I love it! I read the comments up above about not using it all the time and that kind of concerns me…why not? Because of the baking soda? I thought YL products could be ingested and used daily? Would the mix eventually do damage to teeth and gums if used all the time?

  3. Just made a batch. I doubled the ingredients. I brushed my teeth with my homemade charcoal toothpaste and used the mouthwash. My teeth feel so clean and my so fresh. Thank you for sharing the recipe

  4. I use YL Thieves mouthwash daily. It comes from YL in a plastic bottle. Why do they make and send Thieves mouthwash in plastic if it breaks down plastic? Why do they not send it in a glass bottle? Thank you for this recipe.

    • There’s different grades of plastic. YL uses a food grade that doesn’t break down. Citrus oils tend to break down the plastic and the chemicals leach out and get into your system.
